Dili, February 17, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Press Council in collaboration with UNDP provided training to a total of 30 journalists from 16 media outlets, with the types of media such as Newspapers, Radio, Online and Television with the training theme Media Debate in the Context of Democracy, this training was held for three days in the João Paulo II hall, Comoro, Dili.
According to the Chairman of the Press Council, Otelio Ote, this year the Press Council began with training on the world of journalism. Last year, training was held by UNDP supported by the Japanese Embassy in Liquiça, with almost 60 journalists participating in the training.
“Thank you to UNDP who has worked together with the Press Council to provide training to journalists, and also thank you to the representatives of the Japanese Embassy in Timor-Leste who have supported funds for training and also the construction of the new RTTL,Ep. office, Today, we gather again in this place to continue the training for journalists from 16 media and 30 journalists, with the theme, “Media Debate in the Context of Democracy”. This training held for three days with different materials, this training is very important for journalists who work in television and radio.” He said.
He continued, the big hope from this training is that it can facilitate journalists to increase their capacity in the field and also journalists can have a better vision in their role in media institutions.
UNDP Representative in Timor Leste, Muhamed Jaffar added that this program is an important project program for journalists, because so far UNDP has also provided training support to develop the capacity of journalists so that they can work well and talk about democracy and good governance.
“The training given to journalists previously can be a provision for journalists working in the regions or nationally to be able to cover independently, so that they can become journalists who do not depend on other parties. From this training, it can also increase the capacity and insight of each journalist,” said the UNDP representative in Timor Leste.
He added that through this training, journalists can make good use of the material obtained in this training and can also take maximum advantage of this opportunity and can make good use of it in their tasks in the world of work.
Representative of the Japanese Embassy in Timor-Leste, Ms. Minako Tateno said that the Media Debate is the basis of journalism and is used to attract public opinion and also try to protect democracy in this country, Timor-Leste.
“Our journalists have a responsibility to the public to convey information clearly and in writing, so that through this training, journalists can be equipped to make coverage and write news. The Japanese Embassy has been present in Timor-Leste for years, the Embassy continues to support the development of media in Timor-Leste, in addition, the support provided by the Embassy is not only in the form of funds but also support through volunteers.” Said the Representative of the Japanese Embassy
He continued, his hope is that this training can provide more knowledge and disseminate it to young journalists so that they can work intellectually, and can work based on what has been obtained in this training.
