538 UNITAL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN CAPPING DAY CEREMONY

Dili, January 23, 2025 (Média Democracia) – A total of 538 students of Universidade Oriental de Timor Lorosa’e (UNITAL) from the Faculty of Health, Department of Nursing consisting of 388 female students and 150 male students attended the closing ceremony of graduation day. The ceremony was held at the Delra Nova hall, Dili.

In an interview with the Organizing Committee of Capping Day, Edelvino do Santos Babo said that the main objective of this activity is very important for students who are currently studying at the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Department of Nursing because through this activity, it provides students with provisions to make an agreement to become professionals who will later go into the field to practice their profession in the community.

“Capping day is an activity carried out by us, 6th semester students, to prepare ourselves to go into the field or referral hospitals in order to implement the knowledge we have gained in college from semester 1 to semester 6 and today we are carrying out this activity to get to know our profession as nurses better in order to better understand our profession.” He said.

He continued, this activity went well because UNITAL students synergized with the University and Faculty ranks as well as the parents of students, including students who also attended this ceremony.

On the other hand, a student of the Nursing Department, Fabiano R. da Costa, said that as a student of the University who had participated in this ceremony nine times, he felt very proud because from this stage they could know for sure their duties and professionalism, because by making a joint agreement it means they will work together with professionals in the community.

“We will do internships at designated referral hospitals such as Baucau, Oe-Cusse, Maubisse, Maliana. Regarding internships, those of us who attend this ceremony will be divided based on location and we will do internships for two months at designated referral hospitals,” he said.

He added that his hope as a student in the future through this agreement will be increasingly recognized as a professional nurse and also asked the public not to be afraid and lose trust in nurses, even though as an intern nurse but believe that the knowledge gained will be practiced and will be kept confidential from patients being treated at the Hospital.

UNITAL Chancellor Claudino Ninas Navais said that this activity was carried out as an initial step in their learning, because this activity is very important for students who have been studying at the University and will eventually practice it in society, so today is a step for them to move forward in the civil service and become professional nurses according to what they have learned.

“This activity is an important step in the University environment, especially the Faculty of Health in the Nursing Department. From all of you who have agreed today to be professional in carrying out your duties, you must practice what you have learned at the University and be professional in carrying out your duties.” Said the Chancellor

He left a message that what is asked of the students is not only to learn from lectures, there are many references that you can get from books and you will learn together with the community when undergoing a two-month internship at a referral hospital and it is hoped that later you will become professionals in the community.
