Dili, October 3, 2024 (Média Democracia) – The Secretary of State for Social Communications (SECOMS), held an opening event for the exposition of works by students of the Social Communications Department of UNTL, the role of media is very important for the people of Timor-Leste. This event was held at FCS, Caicoli.

In an interview with SECOMS, Expedito Loro Dias Ximenes said that the purpose of this exposition is for the work of Social Communication students on photojournalism, writing reports, graphic design, videos, seminars, podcasts, competitions and also animation, as a very good message to society and students who are studying journalism guidelines.

“Journalistic work is shown through photographs in conveying good messages to the public and students, we know that there are basic principles of journalism, one of which is conveying messages through photos, because photos speak more than what we write with words, therefore the photo message shown early on by students in journalistic exposition work is an important and very good part, because it is an expression of love for their profession, if you want to become a journalist in the future, you must at least know the information and values of journalistic principles to prepare yourself to become the eyes and ears of the public.” He said

He continued, the Social Communication students who showed their work, did not mean that all of them would become journalists in the future, but they could understand the principles of journalism, because journalists have a calling to be the eyes, ears, and voice of the public.

“This activity is very important for the students because they are well prepared and understand the value and power of the media in this country, so we appreciate the photos taken by the students because they contain very good expressions, it shows that they do have a calling to become journalists as a voice, eyes and ears for society, because now the role of the media is to be the eyes, ears and voice for society, because in a world that is interconnected with information that circulates very quickly and develops, we reflect on how to form real perceptions related to the character of people in society, therefore to understand the role of social communication we need to understand the evolution of the times.” He told

As the Director of the UNTL Social Communication Department, Roberto da Costa Pacheco said that this exposition is routinely held every year by students with the aim of applying the theories they have learned in college such as photojournalism and so on, either in the form of photo works, videos or graphic designs to increase students’ insight.

“Every year the Department of Social Communication holds an exposition of scientific works or photography for students, especially for semester VI and above, through these works there will be a possibility for some people who want to buy them, besides that we will also discuss with the faculty that each class must cover these works so that we can see their aesthetic value, therefore students are asked to make good use of what has been taught in lectures about the world of journalism, especially photo journalism, because through photos can convey messages more than thousands, so that everyone can understand what is felt by people and society.” Said the Director of the Social Communication

He explained that this activity is an annual activity of the Social Communication Department and it is very important for students to participate and express their work through photos, videos and graphic designs.
