Dili, May 16, 2025 (Média Democracia) – Timorese boxer “El-Tigre,” whose full name is Elidio from the Revolta Boxing Club, achieved a major milestone in his boxing career by becoming the first Timorese boxer to bring home a championship belt to Timor-Leste. This victory was earned at the international boxing competition “X Promotion” held in Bali, Indonesia. Elidio returned to Timor-Leste on Thursday.
Boxer Elidio da Conceição stated that the victory and the belt he brought to his beloved homeland of Timor-Leste are special, especially as the nation prepares to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the Restoration of Independence on May 20.
“I give thanks to God Almighty, and I also thank all the Timorese brothers and sisters who strongly supported me. This championship is not only for me, but for all Timorese. I dedicate this belt to the national day of May 20,” said Elidio da Conceição.
He added that the belt he won is only the beginning, and in the future, he will continue to work hard to bring even greater achievements to Timor-Leste. Everything requires effort, training, and support from others to continue gaining new experience.
“I ask all Timorese to keep supporting me so I can bring more pride to Timor-Leste in the future. This belt is not the end it is just one step on the path ahead. Especially for young people who want to become boxers, they must be dedicated and train hard to compete abroad,” Elidio said.
He also urged young Timorese to always support him at any time, as the belt he earned is not the final goal but a stepping stone for other youth to pursue the boxing world and help raise Timor-Leste’s profile globally.
Meanwhile, Aplinario Maria Guterres, coach of the Revolta Boxing Club, expressed his deep gratitude to all Timorese who gave strong support to Elidio through prayers and help from both the physical and spiritual realms, which contributed to his victory at the international X Promotion event.
“As Elidio’s coach, I want to thank our beloved country Timor-Leste, especially the youth and all families for their moral and prayerful support. Because of you, we won this belt today. Our goal is not just this one belt, we will continue working to bring more belts home to our nation in the future,” said Coach Aplinario Maria Guterres.
He continued by saying that Elidio “El-Tigre” had been preparing in France, receiving major support from sponsors like Metro Link and others. Thanks to this support, Elidio achieved success and brought home the belt to Timor-Leste.
“Before leaving Timor-Leste, we also met with the President of the Republic José Ramos Horta and Vice Prime Minister Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, who both gave us strong moral support so we could prepare well. A big thanks to our sponsor Metro Link and brother No. Lastly, I bow in gratitude to the beloved people of Timor-Leste, your support helped us show our best performance in this competition,” said the coach.
He reported that boxer “El-Tigre” won the belt after facing an opponent from Russia named Alex. In the match, El-Tigre delivered an impressive performance and defeated Alex by a points margin. The clear point difference gave El-Tigre an undisputed right to the championship belt something no other Timorese boxer has yet achieved.
Furthermore, it was explained that on Thursday (15 May 2025), El-Tigre and his team returned to Timor-Leste via Aero Dili. At Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Comoro, Dili, they were welcomed by hundreds of Timorese gathered to greet the victorious boxer.
