Dili, December 12, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste held a press conference to present the 18th Edition of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Human Rights Award to six winners.
The President of the Republic, Nobel Peace Laureate José Ramos-Horta, presented the 18th Edition of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Human Rights Award to six distinguished winners at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace this week.
“The Sérgio Vieira de Mello Human Rights Award, launched in 2008 by the President of the Republic, aims to recognize the contributions of Timorese citizens, foreign nationals, governmental and non-governmental organizations to the promotion, protection, and defense of human rights in Timor-Leste,” said President José Ramos-Horta.
The President added that the award is presented annually by the President of the Republic on December 10th, the date of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly, and celebrated globally as International Human Rights Day.
“This award is given in two distinct categories. The Civil and Political Rights category is awarded to individuals and organizations that have made notable contributions to the promotion and protection of civil and political rights in the country. The Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights category is granted to those who have made significant contributions to promoting and defending economic, social, and cultural rights. Winners are selected through a rigorous evaluation process carried out by the Honor Council, which reviews applications and conducts verification visits on-site for shortlisted candidates,” the President explained.
According to Presidential Decree No. 129/2025, the following individuals and organizations received the 18th Edition of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Human Rights Award such as, Category I: Civil and Political Rights, 1) Isabel Antónia da Costa Galhos, 2) Me. Leonie Manalu, FCJM, and 3) Julião Cardoso. Category II: Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, 1) Kooperativa Comsoi, 2) Grupo Monocura, and 3) Assosiasaun Esperansa Feto Difisiénsia.
“On the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it is an honor for us to recognize individuals of great courage and organizations dedicated to this cause,” said President José Ramos-Horta.
The President affirmed that their strong commitment to justice, dignity, and equality forms the foundation of the nation’s democracy and represents the hope for the country’s future. They truly represent the spirit of Sérgio Vieira de Mello, whose legacy continues to inspire collective efforts for a more just Timor-Leste.
President Ramos-Horta further explained that recipients of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Human Rights Award receive a certificate and a monetary prize totaling USD $10,000, in accordance with Decree-Law No. 15/2009 of 18 March.
