Díli, 27 June 2026 (Media Democracia) – Resistance Youth expressed their deep sadness and grief over the passing of the late former President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres “Lu-Olo”, who is regarded as a father of the struggle, a national hero, and a leader who dedicated his entire life to serving the people and nation of Timor-Leste.
According to Resistance Youth member José Nunes Lopes, at this moment the Timorese people have lost an important figure who for many years carried out his duties in accordance with the Constitution and showed great concern for the unity and stability of the nation.
“Today, we from Resistance Youth come to express our sadness and grief because we have lost a father of the struggle, a national hero, and a national leader who for a long time dedicated himself to serving the nation and people of Timor-Leste,” said José in Farol (24/06/26).
He further stated that this loss is not only felt in thought, but also in the hearts and feelings of the youth, because Lu-Olo leaves behind a memory and legacy that is important for the nation’s future.
“For more than 24 years of independence, Lu-Olo continued to contribute to Timor-Leste’s development through important roles such as President of the National Parliament and President of the Republic. During those periods, he demonstrated humble, patient, and responsible leadership in facing the various political and social challenges the country encountered. During his term as President of the Republic from 2017 to 2022, Timor-Leste faced a complicated political situation, but Lu-Olo continued to fulfill his role with responsibility and respect for the constitutional order,” he said.
On the same occasion, Resistance Youth also sent a message to the new generation and veterans to strengthen national unity and solidarity. According to José, unity between generations is very important to define the right objectives and direction for Timor-Leste’s future.
“As youth, we ask everyone to continue to hold firmly to the principles of resistance and learn from the suffering our forefathers endured during the liberation struggle, in order to guarantee a better future for the nation and people of Timor-Leste,” he said.
Resistance Youth paid tribute and the highest respect to the late Francisco Guterres “Lu-Olo”, and pledged to continue to uphold the values of patriotism, unity, and service to the people that he left behind.
Rest in peace, Father. Your work and sacrifice will live on forever in the memory of the Timorese people.
