Dili, November 14, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Timor-Leste Journalists Association (AJTL), with support from the Secretary of State for Social Communication (SEKOMS), has concluded activities on the Digital Forum and “AI Literacy” for students to help increase their knowledge, as Timor-Leste is now joining ASEAN. The activity was held this week at HAK Farol.
The President of the Timor-Leste Journalists Association (AJTL), Zevonia Vieira, said that the digital literacy forum received support from SEKOMS to facilitate training for students in order to improve their understanding of digital media use.
“We also facilitated the Digital Literacy and ‘AI Literacy’ forum for students to share about the importance of digital literacy and to increase overall knowledge so students can better understand the digital era, especially now that we are entering ASEAN. Therefore, students need to improve their knowledge and skills on how to use the internet safely,” said AJTL President Zevonia Vieira.
The AJTL President added that today’s materials would be delivered by the Prosecutor for Human Rights and Justice, who spoke about human rights in the digital era. Researchers also facilitated sessions on AI and its impact on young people who use social media.
The Timor-Leste Journalists Association will continue to provide training on digital literacy so that children learn to use digital platforms responsibly and increase their knowledge when using digital tools in school.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of State for Social Communication (SEKOMS), Expedito Loro Dias Ximenes, officially opened the media literacy and digital literacy activities for students, emphasizing the importance for young people who are the future of the nation in order to use digital platforms responsibly.
“I am here to open the digital forum and AI literacy session for students, organized by the IX Constitutional Government and journalists’ organizations present here today. The objective of this digital forum is to promote media literacy and digital literacy among youth and students in various municipalities,” said Secretary of State for Social Communication, Expedito Loro Dias Ximenes.
He added that young people, as the nation’s future, must learn to use platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Google responsibly. As technology advances, irresponsible use is increasing, so this training aims to help students use digital platforms more responsibly according to proper guidelines.
He also delivered a message to the community to use social media responsibly, ethically, and morally. He noted that the digital space is often used to defame others, but it should instead be used for work-related activities and other appropriate purposes in accordance with guidelines.
He further explained that the activity received support of 8,000 USD from SEKOMS to implement training in the municipalities of Bobonaro, Liquiça, and Dili. Today in Dili, AJTL invited schools such as 30 de Agustu, 12 Novembru, and São José to participate in the training on the digital forum and AI literacy.
