Dili, February 17, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Civil Protection Authority (APC) through the External Relations Cabinet and Communications Team delivered weekly data on natural disasters that occurred in Timor-Leste for one week. The conference was held at the APC hall, Caicoli, Dili.
According to the Head of the Cabinet’s External Relations and Communications Section, Nelson Moniz Orleans, the APC recorded 33 cases of disasters this week caused by climate change of various types.
“In the span of one week in Timor-Leste, several types of natural disasters occurred, so that the APC recorded cases of houses that were damaged with a total of 33, meeting the criteria with a total of 27, 3 houses burned down, 9 emergency assistance, 179 people were affected by natural disasters, 59 people were evacuation, 2 people were injured, and 1 person died, these cases were recorded by the APC because of climate change in our country,” said the Head of the Cabinet’s Foreign Relations and Communications Section, Nelson Moniz Orleans.
He continued the disaster that occurred in Municipality such as in Bobonaro strong winds caused 5 houses to be damaged, in Covalima strong winds caused 1 house to be damaged and 1 house to be burned, in Dili strong winds caused 1 house to be damaged and 1 house to be burned, in Ermera strong winds caused 3 houses to be damaged, in Liquiça strong winds caused 9 houses to be damaged and 1 person died, in Viqueque strong winds caused 14 houses to be damaged and 1 house to be burned, this is all related to the incident that occurred this week in Municipalities.
“Currently, the APC Command that is deployed in the municipality area together with related partners is providing emergency response assistance to families affected by natural disasters in the form of food and non-food items. Therefore, the Municipality APC Operations Command continues to conduct detailed surveys of damaged and lost items,” he said.
He added that APC together with partners deployed in municipality carried out emergency response and recovery attribution based on disaster classification data in disaster cases based on Law Number 7/2021 of July according to the type of disaster that occurred.
To further explained that APC immediately conduct a data survey after re-verifying the houses damaged by natural disasters as being in the full or medium damage type, so that it would be published in the near future so that restoration of houses that were totally damaged could be carried out. All residents were also asked to stay away from areas that caused natural disasters.
