APC Records 49 People Affected by Natural Disasters in One Week

Dili, August 26, 2025 (Média Democracia) – From 18 to 25 August 2025, the Civil Protection Authority (APC) registered a total of 49 people affected by natural disasters across seven municipalities during a single week. The conference was held this on Monday.

APC Communications Section Chief, Genoveva Fernandes Almeida, stated that during this week, APC recorded homes damaged in seven municipalities, including two cases that required emergency support and six homes classified as severely affected. APC emphasized providing emergency assistance to victims affected by these disasters.

“During this one week, in the seven municipalities, the Civil Protection Authority and the State Secretary for Civil Protection registered six families whose homes were damaged by natural disasters. Emergency aid was provided for two cases, impacting a total of 49 people, and four individuals were evacuated,” said Almeida.

Almeida added that APC recorded eight homes damaged in the seven municipalities: four due to flooding and four due to fire.

“Seven Municipalities such as in Aileu, Remexio Post, Tulatakeu village, Samalete hamlet, flood affected one home on 10 August 2025. In Ainaro, Hato-Udo Post, Leolima village, Nuno Boco hamlet, fire affected one home on 19 August. In Bobonaro, Mali Post, Ritabou village, Moleana hamlet, fire affected one home on 18 August. In Ermera, Railaco Post, Uma Railaco Kraik village, Riamori hamlet, fire affected one home on 18 August. In Lautem, Lautem Post, Maina 1 village, Soleresi hamlet, flood affected one home on 22 August, no emergency assistance required. In Liquiça, Hafoin Liquisa Vila, Leotal village, Manati hamlet, flood affected one home on 17 August, received emergency assistance. In RAEOA, Sub-region Silo Minarai, Usitasae village, Pune hamlet, flood affected one home on 16 August, and in Nitibe Post, Lela-Ufe village, Hauofe hamlet, fire affected one home on 19 August.” Almeida added

The Civil Protection Authority reminded the public that, according to the National Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics, from 18–25 August, the weather across the country was generally stable. However, central regions and highland areas experienced heavy rainfall, particularly in municipalities such as Lautem (Iliomar), Manufahi, and Viqueque.

Maximum temperatures across the country ranged from 23–32°C, and minimum temperatures ranged from 19–23°C. Moderate winds occurred in central regions, with stronger winds along the northern and southern coasts, including Dili, Atauro, Lautem, Baucau, Viqueque, Manufahi, Manatuto, and Covalima. Sea conditions were reported as normal along the northern coast (0.1–1.0 m) and moderate too rough along the southern coast (0.75–1.5 m).

Almeida explained that eight affected homes have already received emergency assistance from APC and relevant municipal partners, including food and non-food items. The Municipal Operational Commands of the Civil Protection Authority will continue assessing other homes damaged by these disasters.
