APC Records 664 Natural Disaster Cases in Three Weeks

Dili, March 10, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Civil Protection Authority (APC) through the external relations and communication office team (GREK) reported weekly data on natural disaster events that occurred in Timor-Leste for three weeks. The conference was held at the APC hall, Caicoli, Dili.

According to GREK, Nelson Monis Orleans, informed, the APC record disaster cases totaled 664 three weeks, due to climate change of various types.

“During the past three weeks in Timor-Leste, several types of natural disasters have occurred so that APC recorded 664 damaged houses, 92 houses that met the criteria, 44 emergency response houses, 937 residents affected by this natural disaster, 138 residents displaced. The cases recorded by APC are the result of climate change that is occurring in our country,” he said.

He continued, the disasters that occurred in the Municipalities area such as in Aileu, the wind damaged 3 houses, in Bobinaru the wind destroyed 2 houses and a landslide destroyed 1 house, in Ainaru a landslide destroyed 4 houses, in Covalima the wind destroyed 2 houses and fire burned 3 houses, in Dili the wind destroyed 2 houses, fire burned 2 houses, floods destroyed 1 house landslides destroyed 4 houses, in Ermera the wind destroyed 22 houses, landslides destroyed 1 house, in Liquiça the wind destroyed 7 houses, landslides destroyed 2 houses, in Viqueque the wind destroyed 42 houses and fire burned 2 houses, in Manufahi the wind destroyed 4 houses, fire burned 2 houses, in Lautem the wind destroyed 57 houses, in Baucau the wind destroyed 26 houses, floods destroyed 2 houses, fire burned 1 house and on Autauro island the wind destroyed 3 houses.

“Currently, the APC Commander who is deployed in the municipality together with related partners is providing emergency response assistance to families affected by natural disasters in the form of food and non-food items. Therefore, the APC municipal Operations Command continues to conduct a detailed survey of damaged and lost items.” He added.

He added that APC together with partners deployed at the municipality carried out emergency response and recovery attribution based on classification data in disaster cases based on Law Number 7 of 2021 dated June 20 with the type of disaster that occurred.

Further explained that APC immediately conducted data collection after a natural disaster and re-checked damaged houses, such as the type of disaster, whether it was totally or moderately damaged, then it would be published in the short term so that restoration could be carried out on houses that were totally damaged. It was also requested that the entire community be vigilant in order to avoid natural disasters.
