APC REPORTS CASES OF NATURAL DISASTERS DURING ONE WEEK

Dili, January 20, 2024 (Média Democracia) – The Civil Protection Authority (APC) through CNOPC from January 13 to 20 this year registered 5 houses damaged by natural disasters that occurred in six municipalities.

In a press conference delivered by MC Head of External Relations and Communications of ACP, Nelson de Jesus Orleans emphasized that so far the disaster occurred in six municipal areas, APC noted that it did not meet the criteria and only provided emergency response assistance for one house. The number of houses that met the criteria or were affected was five, therefore the APC Municipality immediately provided emergency response assistance to victims affected by the disaster.

“Disaster incident data from January 13 to 20, 2025 in the Timor-Leste region, the disasters recorded by APC were three types, such as floods, fires, strong winds and landslides for a week. APC immediately recorded data on residents affected by the disaster with a total of 27, this disaster APC recorded based on areas such as Aileu in Mauria sub-village, Hohulu Village on January 14, lightning struck a boy to death, the boy was named Joel de Araújo who was 14 years old. In Baucau there was a fire that burned down one house, in Dili there was a fire that burned down one house and the wind damaged one house, in Ermera the wind damaged one house, in Manhufahi the wind damaged one house, in Viqueque the river current carried someone who has not been found until now and a fire that burned down one house.” Said Nelson de Jesus

He continued, with the occurrence of the disaster, APC immediately verified the disaster data and provided emergency response support to the victims so that they could immediately leave the vulnerable area.

“During a week in the six municipalities registered in the APC, it was recorded that 5 houses were damaged due to natural disasters that affected 27 residents,” he added.

APC appealed to the public to stay away from disaster-prone areas because it is currently the rainy season which causes the river current to become strong, therefore it is appealed to the public not to forget to look after children. In addition, it is also appealed to the public not to throw garbage in water channels because it can block the flow of water so as not to cause flooding.
