CNC Holds National Conferences on “Reparation as a Path to Dignify Victims of Political Conflict”

DILI, 06 March 2026 (Média Democracia) – The National Center Chega (CNC), is holding a National Conference with the theme “Reparation as a Path to Dignify Victims of Political Conflict” from 1974-1999.

According to Executive Director of the National Center Chega (CNC), Hugo Maria Fernandes stated CNC will conduct publict consultations to gather opinions, suggestions, and recommendations from all entities. These public consultations will be held four times between July last year and March this year, starting with consultations in the Municipalities of Dili, Aileu, Bobonaro, and Finally in Viqueque.

Today we will conduct this public consultation to gather opinions, suggestions, and recommendations from all entities, some of which have already implemented some reparative measures, and also from government representatives directly related to this issue to form their opinions. We will hold this public consultation four times between July last year and March this year, starting with consultations in Dili, Aileu, Bobonaro, and finally in Viqueque,” said Hugo Maria Fernandes, Executive Director of the National Centre Chega (CNC).

He informed that this work is collective, not just the Chega Centre, but a broader collective involving the ministerial line with interested parties and state government entities that weren’t involved in the elaboration but are implementing these reparative measures together with the National Centre Chega as a gesture showing that these measures aren’t difficult to implement.

On the other hand, the Minister of Affairs of National Liberation Combatants (MAKLN) Gil da Costa “Oan Soru” stated that Timor Leste can be a free and independent nation, but there is always the determination of the people that transforms something unbelievable into reality, and this comes from great conquests and sacrifices, because it’s not a privilege.

Before, parents made history, but now their children are poor because of that history, that’s a big problem. If parents made history and don’t know how to tell it to their children, that’s a disaster. It’s like a tree with lush leaves, a broad trunk, but its roots don’t hold the earth, that’s a big problem,” he said.

Meanwhile, the National Conference with the theme “Reparation as a path to dignify victims of political conflict” was opened by the Minister of Affairs of National Liberation Combatants (MAKLN) Gil da Costa “Oan Soru” at the Old Comarca Balide.
