Dili, March 7, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Executive President of the Cristal Foundation, Agostinho dos Santos Gonçalves, advised the students of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Instituto Superior Cristal 2025 to be diligent students, have quality in the learning process, have a humanistic and spiritual nature so that when they become health workers they must serve patients with compassion.
These words were conveyed when he took his position at the Academic Orientation for new students of 2025 of the Faculty of Health Sciences, at the Instituto Superior Cristal (ICS) at the Instituição Educativo Cristal-Fundação Cristal Football Field, Balide, on Thursday.
He continued, each department plays a crucial role in developing essential insights and skills so that students can meet the health needs of the Timor-Leste community with competence and ethics.
“The Faculty of Health Sciences is based on three important pillars that are oriented towards the entire educational process, which is must be Humanistic, Spiritual and Quality in the entire learning process, actualizing the curriculum with formal and truly professional teaching staff.” He said.
He explained, from here humans are taught to care for patients with full empathy, therefore in using the profession one must spread a smile and serve patients with all one’s heart and affection.
“Respect and dignity, preparing students to become professionals who understand and value human life, because human life is important and spirituality which is the basis of our principles, inspires our students to obey the teachings of Christ in everyday practice.” He said.
The Department of Nursing prepares students to work with science in primary, secondary and tertiary health care, enabling them to become fundamental agents in health promotion and patient care.
The Department of Midwives is a professional team that will accompany and be responsible for mothers and babies, they are the only ones who have the technical competence and human sensitivity to ensure quality health services for the future generations of Timor-Leste.
The Department of Physiotherapy trains students to rehabilitate and prevent the physical health of patients, using advanced physiotherapy techniques to improve the quality of life for those requiring specialist care.
As the Magnificent Chancellor of ISC, Sebastião Pereira said that the orientation for new students provides knowledge to students, because they are entering a new environment in the academic field.
“The purpose of this orientation is for you to know about the structure of Instituto Superior Cristal (ISC) and Units such as, existing Installations, learning resources, Laboratory Library that you will use during the learning process. For the library, you will learn about Digital Online accessibility and you can read the books available.” He said.
He advised the students to study well and utilize the available facilities, because at ISC there are already laboratories for the Nursing Department, Midwifery Department and Physiotherapy Department which have complete equipment, so they must utilize this opportunity well.
On this occasion, the Chairperson of the 2025 Organizing Committee, Angelmo Alves de Araújo, said that the purpose of this orientation is for students to learn about the ISC environment and there will be a mental test stage, so that new students can find out what ISC has done in this place so far.
“This activity only lasts for one day and will be closed in the afternoon, but for the continuation tomorrow it will be carried out directly by the Faculty to conduct mental health tests on students so that they dare to face patients in the hospital, especially corpses,” he said.
In addition, the number of students from the Faculty of Health Sciences who attended this orientation was 613 students consisting of three departments, namely the Nursing Department with 295 students, the Midwifery Department with 296 students and the Physiotherapy Department with 22 students.
