Dili, June 26, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Red Cross of Timor-Leste (CVTL) celebrated their 25th anniversary with the theme “Keeping Humanity.” The ceremony took place at the CVTL headquarters in Colmera, Dili, on Tuesday.
In an interview with the President of CVTL, Madalena Fernandes M. Hanjan Costa Soares stated that the 25th anniversary celebration is a silver jubilee for the organization, which has been a vital part of Timor-Leste since the country’s independence in 2002 and has continued to exist through difficult times.
“Today, we are gathered here to celebrate the 25th anniversary of CVTL. This marks a silver jubilee since CVTL was officially established following our independence in 2002, which shows that CVTL has been serving in Timor-Leste for quite a long time,” said Madalena Hanjan at the CVTL Formosa office in Dili on Tuesday (24/06).
CVTL has always operated on a voluntary basis but has remained committed to assisting communities whenever there is a need. This includes support during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as during the visit of Pope Francis to Timor-Leste. CVTL has also been active in delivering clean water and providing blood donations for communities in need.
“This 25-year history shows how the Red Cross has matured in its mission and continues its service in support of national development in our country, under any circumstances,” Madalena added.
She reaffirmed that CVTL does not aim to extract people from poverty, but rather to help communities overcome the challenges they face and guide them towards a better life.
In the same event, the President of the Civil Protection Authority (APC), Jesuino dos Reis Matos Carvalho, congratulated CVTL on its anniversary and encouraged the organization’s staff and founders to reflect on their past activities throughout their existence in the nation.
“I congratulate CVTL on its anniversary. I hope the team reflects on the activities they have carried out. We know that CVTL often works through donations and with the support of many volunteers, and their activities have encouraged widespread community participation, especially in areas of self-care and disaster prevention,” said the President of the Civil Protection Authority.
The government also deeply appreciates the role of CVTL in complementing its work. There are instances when disasters occur in municipalities, and even before APC reaches the location, CVTL is already present. This shows how CVTL supports the government by paying attention to communities affected by food shortages and natural disasters.
