Dili, 24 March 2026 (Média Democracia) – FOKUPERS together with the Advocacy Network composed of Civil Society with commitment and struggle againts inequality and violence againts women and girls in Timor-Leste.
According to Spokeperson Natalia De Jesus, Fokupers recognizes that the escalation of violence againts women and girls continues to increase significantly, bringing big concern to civil society and the entire community, such as domestic violence, sexual harassment, sexual abuse, sexual assault, especially cases of Femicide that occurred recently.
“FOKUPERS together with the Advocacy Network expresses concern and deeply regrets the recent handling of the Femicide case that occurred on March 21, 2026, in the area of Pante Kelapa, in front of Seara Shop, we consider that these situation show weakness in the institutional response, particulary in the area of prevention for victims in immediate action to ensure, protect and make referrals when women are at serious risk.” Said Spokeperson Natalia De Jesus
The Spokeperson informed, FOKUPERS is also concerned about the situation of women who face violence in their daily lives, in the family, community, and society which continues to blame women when they experience violence, just because what they wear, their body full of tattos, our being out late. This isn’t a reason to justify violence in any form and take a life.
“We note that femicide cases in the judicial process take a long time, lack transparency and accountability, which implies that violence, will continue to repeat and occur in family, community, and societal life.” Informs Spokeperson Natalia De Jesus
Meanwhile, the State of Timor-Leste guarantees and defends its citizens through very strong legal instruments, and has ratified international instruments to ensure justice for women and guarantee security for their lives.
