Dili, May 19 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Ministry of State Administration (MAE), through Minister Tomás Cabral, has declared that preparations for activities marking the celebration of Restoration of Independence Day are complete and will take place at the Presidential Palace.
He stated that the main celebration will be held at the Aitarak Laran Presidential Palace, under the supervision of the Dili Municipal Authority. In the afternoon, the President of the Republic will officially open a local governance exhibition at the Port of Dili area.
“Through this exhibition, we can see the services that have been carried out in the municipalities over the past year, and we can also assess how the central government has delegated and entrusted responsibilities to local governments, as well as the technical assistance provided to the municipalities,” said Minister Tomás Cabral.
He further explained that the 20 May celebration will be a simple ceremony, as the government is also preparing a major event for 28 November 2025, which will mark the 50th anniversary of Timor-Leste’s Proclamation of Independence.
“The celebration of the Proclamation of Independence in November will involve international participants, so the 20 May event this year will be kept modest in scale. However, there will still be cultural competitions such as traditional dances and music performed by municipal groups,” added the Minister.
He emphasized that the cultural dance and music competitions will identify outstanding groups, who will then qualify to compete again during the November celebration, which will include international participants.
“Looking at the overall budget allocation, the government has planned expenditures globally for all official ceremonies, including those on 20 May, 30 August, 28 November, and 31 December,” reaffirmed Minister Cabral.
He elaborated that the overall budget is based on the 2025 national celebration schedule, as these activities are highly significant for the nation of Timor-Leste.
