MI-PNTL Holds Press Conference on Criminal Cases Recorded Over Two Weeks

Dili, September 6, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Ministry of Interior’s Security Superintendent of Police shared information regarding security incidents that occurred during the two-week period from 18 to 31 August 2025 with the public in Timor-Leste. The press conference was accessed by Média Democracia through the PNTL page on Friday.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Interior Security, Police Superintendent João Belo dos Reis, stated during the press conference that the objective was to share information with transparency, accountability, and institutional responsibility regarding the services carried out by the Ministry of Interior and the National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL).

“During the reporting period, the Incident Management System (IMS) recorded a total of 123 cases at the national, municipal, and post levels. These included five types of crimes: Domestic Violence (49 cases), Physical Assault (36 cases), Theft (7 cases), Sexual Assault (5 cases), and Threats (4 cases),” said the Ministry of Interior Security spokesperson, Police Superintendent João Belo dos Reis.

He further explained that during these two weeks, PNTL responded to three major crimes: a murder case in Ermera Municipality, a murder case in Baucau Municipality, and a shooting incident involving an Indonesian citizen where three members of the Border Patrol Unit (UPF) were injured in the Oecusse Administrative Region. Following investigations, PNTL referred the case files to the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) in each respective municipality.

Meanwhile, in the capital Dili, more cases were recorded compared to other municipalities, with a total of 80 cases, including the highest number of Domestic Violence cases at 24.

“Traffic accident data recorded by the Road Traffic Department during the two-week period (18–31 August) amounted to 81 accidents. These accidents resulted in 97 minor injuries, 11 serious injuries, and 3 deaths. Dili Municipality once again recorded the highest number of accidents, with 18 cases in just 14 days,” the Police Spokesperson reported.

He also highlighted traffic violations and fines detected during this period: 3 government vehicles, 369 private vehicles, and 23 public transport vehicles were fined.

“The most common types of violations committed by offenders were: no documentation (85), not wearing helmets (85), disobeying authority orders (102), traffic signal violations (43), and vehicles without license plates (9),” he said.

The spokesperson reported that revenue collected from traffic violations and routine transport inspections amounted to US$14,541.00 in the previous week, and US$15,424.00 this week, all deposited into the State Treasury.

He also explained that revenue was collected from the entry and exit of heavy and light foreign transport vehicles through integrated border posts. Revenue from these activities included: Batugade Border Post (US$4,783.00), Salele Border Post (US$2,400.00), Sakato Border Post (US$1,279.00), and Oesilo Border Post (US$83.00), totaling US$8,545.00.
