Dili, July 29, 2025 (Média Democracia) – A joint team composed of the Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL) Liquiça Municipality Command, through the Police Intelligence Services Directorate (DSIP), and the Timor-Leste Defense Force Command (F-FDTL), deployed in Liquiça Municipality, received information on July 27, 2025, indicating that vehicles marked Carry and Grand Max were transporting smuggled goods from the Loes area toward the capital, Dili, prompting immediate identification. This information was accessed by Média Democracia through PNTL’s official page on Tuesday.
PNTL Command Spokesperson, Police Superintendent João Belo dos Reis, stated in a press conference on Monday (28/07) that the joint team had detected smuggling activity at the border and immediately conducted an operation to stop the activity, which involved the illegal import of beverages from the border into the capital Dili.
“The process is ongoing, and the seized goods will also be presented to the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) in Maliana. Currently, we are identifying the data we collected, and it appears that one PNTL member was also involved using his vehicle to transport the smuggled goods,” said PNTL Spokesperson João Belo dos Reis.
The Police Superintendent emphasized the ongoing investigation to determine the reasons behind the PNTL member’s involvement and why he transported the goods. Evidence collected during the operation is currently secured by the Criminal Investigation Service Directorate (DSIK) and will be delivered to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Maliana.
“The joint team identified the two vehicles in question (Carry & Grand Max), which were transporting smuggled beverages including 132 packs of Coca-Cola totaling 3,168 cans, 126 packs of Sprite totaling 3,026 cans, and 55 packs of Y.C. One 1000 totaling 1,679 bottles,” explained the Police Superintendent.
The current Director of DSIK further stated that the suspects detained by the joint team for identification include four individuals with initials A.S.G, A.L, L.P, and T.C.L., who are now awaiting further legal procedures.
It was also explained that the joint team composed of PNTL Liquiça Municipality Command, the Police Intelligence Services Directorate (DSIP), and the Falintil-Defense Force of Timor-Leste (F-FDTL) deployed in Liquiça Municipality, after receiving the information on July 27, 2025, about the Carry and Grand Max vehicles transporting smuggled goods from Loes toward Dili through illegal routes, immediately conducted the operation to capture and identify those involved.
