Dili, July 23, 2025 (Média Democracia) – Plan International, in collaboration with its partners, held a workshop with the theme “Towards an inclusive and safe future that unlocks the full potential of Timorese people in all their diversity.” The activity took place at the Fundação Oriente on Monday.
The Director of Plan International (PI), Fatima Soares, stated that their principles emphasize that everyone must receive respect and space for freedom, while maintaining a commitment to build an inclusive Timor-Leste that respects everyone regardless of gender identity or abilities.
“Our principle is to ensure that everyone receives respect. Only then can we create space for equal freedom and opportunity. I want to say that inclusion is not just a concept to be debated but must be practiced continuously so that we can change some of our mindsets,” said Director Fatima Soares.
The Director further explained that this event is a valuable opportunity. Through a project funded by the European Union focusing on a safe and inclusive future that unlocks the potential of all Timorese in their diversity, the project will conclude this month.
“How can we fight for the rights of people with disabilities and the LGBTIQ+ community? At this moment, Plan International wants to reaffirm its commitment that we will continue to implement the project supported by European Union funding,” she said.
She also informed that the organization continues to build on and enhance existing practices and discussions, and maintains its five-year commitment. Plan International also has a strategic plan for the next five years to be launched in August.
“This activity also celebrates the anniversary of the disability movement. We are together with different stakeholders from civil society organizations and youth. How can we open up space and promote a safer inclusion across the country?” said the Plan International Director.
She affirmed that the activity aims to explore and uplift the talents of people with disabilities and the LGBTQ community, and provide them with a safe space to carry out their daily activities.
“We see the challenges facing this nation, including widespread discrimination against the rights of many, with ongoing violence against LGBTIQ+ communities and people with disabilities within our own country,” said Director Fatima Soares.
She emphasized the importance of ensuring that people with disabilities receive the same opportunities as everyone else. Events like this aim to encourage everyone to reflect and reduce violence and discrimination, because all people have equal rights.
She also explained the importance of asking relevant ministries to raise public awareness, especially so that families understand that children must attend school and young people must complete their education in order to prevent discrimination. This activity was financially supported by the European Union and implemented by Plan International, LGBTIQ+ community organizations, and AHADMTL.
