Dili, April 25, 2025 (Média Democracia) – Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão expressed his sorrow upon returning from an overseas trip. His grief was conveyed during an interview with journalists at Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili.
In the interview, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão stated that His Holiness Pope Francis was a globally recognized and highly respected figure, admired especially for his courage in speaking out to all believers, particularly young people, as well as to leaders of war to demonstrate ethics and love toward one another. He emphasized that when wars occur, it is innocent people who suffer. These were not just words directed to nations like Ukraine and Palestine, but to all leaders. Recently, Pope Francis also spoke about Gaza, urging people to love one another and reject hatred and division.
“His Holiness Pope Francis was like a wise elder who always reminded leaders to love one another and their people. He also left behind a heartfelt message during his visit to us, calling on all Catholics to help one another, especially those who are most in need. The Pope stood as an example within the Catholic Church and served as a moral image for leaders, seeing humanity through both a moral and human lens. He was a human being who truly loved Catholics and embraced everyone regardless of race or religion,” said Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão during the airport interview.
He added that the Pope’s recent visit to Timor-Leste strongly impacted the Catholic faithful, especially the youth. During that historic moment at the Tasi-Tolu altar, the world watched in admiration as Timorese Catholics gathered in great numbers. His Holiness left behind many reflections, which have now made the faithful feel deep sorrow. The world has lost a great spiritual guide not only Timorese Catholics, but people around the globe are mourning the passing of Pope Francis, who ended his earthly pilgrimage on April 21.
