Dili, June 21, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, received the title of Honorary Adjunct Professor from Taylor’s University Malaysia on Thursday, 19 June 2025.
The ceremony underscored the strengthening of ties between Timor-Leste and Southeast Asian educational institutions. The President of Timor-Leste, Ramos-Horta, was honored at the university campus and delivered an acceptance speech following a welcoming address by Vice-Chancellor Professor Barry Winn.
The event marked the launch of an ambitious educational partnership designed to prepare Timorese students for admission into institutions in both Malaysia and Singapore. The program, sponsored by Taylor’s University, will provide comprehensive support, including English language training, cultural acclimatization, study tours during holidays, and teacher preparation to ensure that Timorese students meet the proficiency standards required for successful integration into regional educational systems.
This initiative represents a significant step toward Timor-Leste’s full integration into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), following a successful model previously implemented for Chinese students seeking admission into prestigious institutions such as the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. The program demonstrates Timor-Leste’s commitment to educational advancement and regional cooperation as the nation continues to strengthen its ties within the Southeast Asian community.
