Dili, June 10, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, has expressed his heartfelt condolences and deep sympathy to the Government and People of Zambia following the passing of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu in Pretoria, South Africa.
In an official letter of condolence addressed to the President of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema, dated 6 June 2025, President Ramos-Horta acknowledged the late President Lungu’s significant contributions to Zambia’s political and institutional development during his term as Head of State.
President Ramos-Horta recognized former President Lungu’s dedication to public service and his commitment to the principles of the rule of law and national unity, values reflected in Zambia’s national motto, “One Zambia, One Nation.” He noted that Mr. Lungu served with determination and leadership during a challenging period in Zambia’s history.
“Former President Lungu played an important role in Zambia’s political and institutional life, serving with dedication, determination, and leadership during a difficult period in the nation’s history. He guided the country with a deep sense of duty and a strong commitment to public service, the rule of law, and national unity, principles embodied in the motto ‘One Zambia, One Nation.’ In this time of grief and mourning, we extend our solidarity to the people of Zambia as they mourn the loss of their former Head of State. We join you in sorrow and remembrance, with the hope that his legacy will inspire future generations to serve with renewed commitment to peace, democracy, and development,” said President Ramos-Horta.
President Ramos-Horta’s message reflects the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity between Timor-Leste and Zambia, the two nations that have both faced significant challenges on their paths to democracy and development.
