Dili, December 24, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Presidency of the Republic, in collaboration with the IX Constitutional Government, hosted the annual “Christmas with the People” celebration at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace. The event brought together diverse communities from across the nation, fostering a spirit of unity during the Christmas season. In the press release, President of the Republic José Ramos-Horta stated that the celebrations began on 6 December with the opening of a Nativity Scene (Prezepio) Exhibition, reviving a cherished Christmas tradition in the country. The Nativity Scene exhibition, a long-standing tradition within the Christian faith, represents a profound expression of Timor-Leste’s spirituality, creativity, and community spirit.
The main “Christmas with the People” event on 22 December opened with a vibrant family festival. The program featured cultural performances by children and youth groups from schools, orphanages, and community projects, including Grupo Milagre, the Presidential Library Group, and the Portuguese School. Highlights included festive dances, choral performances, a children’s fashion show, and free activities such as face painting, games, and handicrafts.
The second part of the celebration began with a symbolic traditional welcome by President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão. This was followed by Christmas reflection messages and official speeches delivered by both the President and the Prime Minister.
A key moment of the event was the screening of a short documentary showcasing the Presidency’s efforts in supporting rural communities. This was followed by the official opening of the Christmas fair. The celebration culminated in a symbolic gift-giving ceremony, during which the President and Prime Minister presented gifts to children and community representatives, concluding the event in a joyful atmosphere with a shared dinner.
The festive spirit was further enhanced by musical performances from artists including Tere Elizabeth, Banda Três Pass, and Vidigal Pinto, along with interactive segments such as the Telemor Quiz.
“As we enter the Christmas season, I ask all of you to nurture our sense of community, strengthen our solidarity, and reinforce family bonds that truly embody the spirit of our nation. Together, let us draw closer to those most in need, so that the joy of Christmas may fill the hearts of our communities and live within every Timorese,” said President of the Republic José Ramos-Horta.
The Presidency expressed its gratitude to all donors and partners who contributed to making the celebration possible. Their generosity strengthened the support provided to communities and children during this Christmas season.
