Timor-Leste Women Entrepreneurs Hold International Women’s Day

Dili, March 10, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The World Bank Timor-Leste together with Timor-Leste Women Entrepreneurs commemorated International Women’s Day with the theme, “Business and Justice”. The event was held at the World Bank Timor-Leste, last Friday.

According to the representative of Timor-Leste Women Entrepreneurs, Domingas dos Santos, the International Women’s Day commemoration activity held today is to congratulate Timor-Leste women so that they do not miss opportunities and must work hard to create their own small businesses, so that in the future they can achieve success.

“I have hopes of becoming a strong woman, because after independence from Indonesia, in 2004 I formed a women’s group with a total of 13 people, we had the idea that each of us collected $ 25.00 it would become a total of $ 300.00, then we borrowed from each other to make a circulation until 2008 with an amount of up to 7 million USD, we started to form a group called, “Lakon Nakukun Mosu Naroman” said the representative of the Timor-Leste Women Entrepreneurs, Domingas dos Santos

She continued, related to its existence from 2008 until now, the Lakon Nakukun Mosu Naroman group has grown with a membership of more than 2000 people and a turnover of 300 USD to 1 million USD.

“I founded this cooperative group starting from Bobonaru and I developed it to Dili, now there are some that have reached Gleno, Ermera, including Aileu. When this cooperative group has entered these municipalities, none of them have failed. This year I will develop it to Manufahi, because I want to share my experience and transparent accounting system and also help the poor.” She said

She emphasized that through this cooperative, it has a motto that states that the meaning of Lakon Nakukun Mosu Naroman is to give light to those who have been living in darkness facing various challenges, because the enemies of this cooperative group are those who are poor and helpless and have no spirit.

As a participant, Santina de Araújo said that in connection with the commemoration of International Women’s Day, she would like to congratulate the women who are in this beloved country or who are currently working abroad.

“I would like to congratulate all women in this beloved country and those who are currently working abroad, do not lose heart and do not lose the spirit to continue fighting against various obstacles, because with our joint efforts, in the future there will be success for all, strong women then this country also will be strong.” She said.

She continued, on this occasion she wanted to give appreciation to women, because today is a day to give recognition to the role of women in the world of work, educational leaders, and other sectors.

Further explained that through the commemoration of International Women’s Day, it should be able to make all women aware, both in the country and abroad, not to waste the opportunities and time that have been given uselessly, because all parties have obtained gender equality, all parties have obtained it in the eyes of the law.
