APC REPORTS ON WIND NATURAL DISASTER IN THE LAST WEEK OF JANUARY

Dili, February 4, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Civil Protection Authority (APC) held a press conference to update the natural disaster situation for a week starting from January 27 to February 3, 2025.

In the press conference, the Head of APC External Relations, Nelson Nunes de Orleans, conveyed the report on the list of natural disasters every week in Timor-Leste.

“Starting from January 27 to February 3, 2025, just to confirm the weekly report in Timor Leste that the situation is normal and the type of disaster that occurred from the CNOPC-APC side recorded a strong wind disaster that destroyed 7 houses and 5 people who met the criteria, only 2 received emergency response assistance.” Said the Head of APC External Relations

The number of people affected is 32, with a total of 15 people evacuated mainly in the following areas, in Bobonaro the wind destroyed one house in the village of Ritabou on January 28, in Covalima strong winds destroyed one house in the village of Suai Loro on January 28, in Ermera the wind destroyed two houses in the village of Sare on January 10, in Liquiça the wind destroyed one house in the village of Guiço on January 30, in Manufahi the wind destroyed one house in the village of Holarua on January 27 and in Viqueque the wind destroyed one house in the village of Caraubalo on January 31.

He informed that in relation to this disaster, APC together with teams in all regions immediately conducted data collection in order to provide emergency response assistance to victims of natural disasters.

“The team immediately provided emergency response assistance to affected families in the form of food items and non-food items, after which the team immediately conducted a data collection to see what the conditions were like in the affected areas, such as mildly bad, normal bad and very bad.” He said.

He said, after this he will inform the public to find out whether they will accept the recoveration or not, but the team must first collect data.

He continued, this year APC conducted a data collection for those who had registered for recoveration with a total of 497.

“I just want to know that this year we have data collection that has been registered by APC for recoveration with a total of 497, to prepare for this recovery, all municipalities are included except Ermera.” He added.

He added that this year the APC funds are still in the process of being executed this year, still waiting for the financial execution recoveration with the affected houses, regarding which types of recovery will be carried out again.

APC appeals to the public that if heavy rain occurs, they are asked to stay away from risky places such as riverbanks, mountains, large trees, power lines, and keep important documents in a safe place.

In case of emergency, follow the directions of local authorities or the nearest Civil Protection if evacuation is necessary, remain calm, find a safe place and avoid panic.
