APC RECORDED 185 VICTIMS AFFECTED BY NATURAL DISASTER

Dili, February 11, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Civil Protection Authority (APC) reports information on Natural Disaster events that occurred in Timor-Leste from 3-10 February 2025.

APC External Relations Chief Nelson Nunes de Orleans delivered information related to reports of natural disasters that occurred in the country during the week collected by the National Operations Center for Civil Protection.

“Starting from February 3-10, 2025, for one week, the Timor Leste region is still in normal conditions and there are several types of disasters collected by CNOPC-APC, the total number of disaster cases such as strong winds is 29, emergency response assistance is 8, 33 meet the criteria, the number of victims affected is 185, 99 people are displaced.” He said.

The number affected by natural disasters such as in Aileu strong winds damaged three houses, one house burned down. In Ainaru landslides damaged four houses, in Bobonaru strong winds damaged two houses, one house by landslide, in Covalima one house burned down, two houses damaged by strong winds, in Dili strong winds damaged 23 houses, 11 houses burned down, in Ermera 8 houses damaged by strong winds, in Liquiça seven houses damaged by strong winds, six by landslides, in Manufahi strong winds damaged one house, two houses burned down, and in Viqueque strong winds damaged one house.

He informed that when a natural disaster occurs, the APC Municipal Command and related partners immediately provide emergency response assistance to affected families.

“For emergency response assistance, both food and non-food, the APC Operational Command will continue to conduct detailed data collection on damaged and lost goods,” he said.

On this occasion, APC appealed to the entire community to immediately move away from areas or places at risk when heavy rain occurs.

“Asking the public to stay away from vulnerable places such as riverbanks, near mountains, large trees and electricity, and to store important documents in a safe place,” he said.

In some emergency cases follow the orientation of the local authorities or the nearest civil protection, if necessary carry out an evacuation, stay calm, find a safe place and avoid panic.

He added that when a disaster occurs, the APC Municipal Commander immediately carries out assessments and verification of affected families and provides emergency response support to the victims’ families in the field.

The limitations or obstacles experienced by several municipalities are limited transportation facilities, therefore in the future they can add transportation facilities to deploy joint teams to conduct data collection and transportation of goods or materials in the form of food and non-food items to affected families in villages and sub-villages.
