TO BUILD PEACE AND BROTHERHOOD, CNC FORMS PRT WORKING GROUP

Dili, February 13, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Centro Nacional Chega (CNC), a Public Institution held a meeting to form a working group on the Timorese People’s Reconciliation Process (PRT) with Resistance Organizations, Civil Society and Government Institutions regarding the results of the 2023 border festival in Bobonaro and the 2024 border festival in RAEOA.

CNC,IP Executive Director, Hugo Maria Fernandes said that the purpose of this meeting was to form a team to implement the Ambeno Peace Declaration (DDA) as an effort to realize human brotherhood and build sustainable peace.

“Therefore, it also responds to the CNC’s annual strategic plan and action plan with the general objective of “Historical Memory is preserved and promoted, public entity and a rational society for human rights values,” said the Executive Director.

In addition, the specific objective is “Is there an effective conflict prevention and reconciliation mechanism” with the expected outcome that the Timorese people living in Indonesia and Timor-Leste have participated in the reconciliation process, and there have been recommendations to the Timor-Leste and Indonesia governments.

The working group’s ongoing services include facilitating dialogue with victims on reconciliation issues through commemorative events.

“Develop and promote mechanisms to address the factors that are obstacles to the reconciliation process and efforts to build sustainable peace between the people of Timor-Leste and Indonesia, as well as between the people of Timor-Leste to find constructive and inclusive ways of reconciliation to contribute to building peace and justice for all people,” he said.

Proactively engage with the Timor-Leste government to organize Senior Officials Meetings and Free Zones in the border areas to facilitate reconciliation processes and cultural ceremonies.

Meanwhile, other work that is still being done by the working group is to coordinate and consult with related parties (local government, village, veterans, church and youth) in the Municipality that can be used as a place for reconciliation action. Coordinating and meeting with related authorities in Indonesia and Timor-Leste regarding reconciliation issues.

In addition, the Team still holds regular meetings to outline work plans regarding technical activities related to reconciliation issues.

“Conducting effective advocacy to the governments of Timor-Leste and Indonesia to implement the recommendations of the Truth and Friendship Commission (TRC), conducting effective advocacy to sovereign bodies to immediately make political and legal improvements as a way to ensure justice for victims of human rights violations during the 1984-1999 conflict, including providing official recognition to victims.” He said.

The Executive Director informed that at the 2024 Border festival held in Oecusse, Ambeno participants conducted an exchange consisting of representatives of the Resistance Organization, Youth Organization, patriotic generation, ASSEPOL.

“The association of victims and representatives of the East Timorese community living in Western Timor who are in the Forum Komunikasi Pejuang Timor-Timur (FKPTT) with open hearts and a strong spirit of brotherhood and reconciliation, were able to meet and discuss and produce the Ambeno Declaration as a result of this exchange,” he said.

The Ambeno Declaration is a stepping stone that proves the sincerity of the Timor Leste people to break free from the political shackles of the past.

“This declaration contains points of compromise and action that will be implemented or carried out by Timor Leste and Indonesia (especially the people of West Timor),” he said.

In addition, the team formation meeting was also attended by Resustance Organization, Civil Society and Government Institution which consisting of Committtee of 12 November, Dewan Solidaritas Mahasiswa Pemuda Pelajar Timor-Leste, ASSEPOL, Victim Association 1974-1999, Forum Komunikasi Pejuang Timor-Timur (FKPTT), FITUN, OPJELATIL, Sagrada Família, DPP IMPETU, Patriota Generation, HAK Asaociation, RENETIL, Acbit, AJAR, CNJTL, PDHJ, the President of the Republic, the Ministry of Business Strager and Cooperation and g7+.
