Dili, February 24, 2025 (Média Democracia) – President José Ramos-Horta has started his working visit to Vietnam on 24-26 February 2025 to participate in the ASEAN Future Forum 2025. Themed, “Building a United, Inclusive and Resilient ASEAN in the Global Transformation,” the forum brings together regional leaders to discuss the future of ASEAN and address the major challenges faced by each region.
In the Press Conference during his working visit, President Ramos-Horta will hold bilateral meetings with high-level Vietnamese leaders, including His Excellency Luong Cuong, President of Vietnam, and His Excellency To Lam, Secretary General of the Vietnam Community Party. The meetings will strengthen diplomatic relations between Timor-Leste and Vietnam and will advance discussions on regional cooperation and development.
At the ASEAN Future Forum, President Ramos-Horta will deliver a keynote address at the Forum’s opening ceremony and participate in a high-level Q&A session with the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Secretary of State, Pham Minh Chinh, Prime Minister of Malaysia, His Excellency Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, and Prime Minister of New Zealand, His Excellency Christopher Luxon.
The ASEAN Future Forum 2025 serves as an important platform for regional dialogue on critical issues including advanced technology, comprehensive security, and ASEAN’s role in an increasingly complex global landscape.
Timor-Leste’s participation in the Forum underscores its commitment to regional integration and its journey towards ASEAN accession. The country continues to make significant progress in the accession process.
“The ASEAN Future Forum is an important platform for dialogue and collaboration as we work together to build an integrated and more resilient Southeast Asia,” the President said. He continued that, “Timor-Leste’s participation reflects our strong commitment to regional cooperation and our readiness to contribute significantly to ASEAN’s shared vision for sustainable and prosperous development. As we progress on our ASEAN accession journey, we look forward to working with our neighbors to address common challenges and seize opportunities for collective growth.”
As a country committed to sustainable development and enhanced regional cooperation, Timor-Leste wishes to contribute to discussions on climate change, energy transition and strengthening regional resilience through collective action and collaboration.
The Presidential Delegation included government officials, the Ministry of Foreign Business and Cooperation demonstrating Timor-Leste’s strong commitment to engage with regional partners and contribute to ASEAN in the future.
