Dili, March 10, 2025 (Média Democracia) – Director of Human Rights and Justice (PDHJ), Virgilio da Silva Guterres “Lamukan” asked the relevant parties to investigate the cases of sexual violence and sexual harassment that occurred at the 5 de Maio and Nicolau Lobato schools. He conveyed this at the PDHJ office last Friday.
In an interview with PDHJ, Virgilio da Silva Guterres “Lamukan” said that this situation is a major concern, especially related to violence in the form of sexual harassment, because schools are places where many people seek knowledge in order to broaden their horizons and become disciplined people, so cases like this are a major concern and always occur in public spaces and institutions.
“We see that cases of violence in the form of sexual harassment and molestation are of great concern to parents, including all of us, because in cases of violence of this type last year, PDHJ had received a reclamation from the victim that there were state officials who committed the case against their officials, but there was no legal action to reprimand the officials, and finally the case got bigger, then there was no punishment,” he said.
He continued, regarding this situation, PDHJ expressed regret and concern regarding the two leaders and PDHJ has spoken with the Ministry of Education to conduct a campaign in schools to eliminate violence in schools, including eliminating violence with the type of sexual harassment from the Principal to Students. From this case, PDHJ also asked the Ministry of Public and PSIC to investigate this case so that it can be processed legally, so that it can provide justice for the victim.
