S.E.I and Entourage Participate in the 69th CWS Opening Meeting in New York

Dili, March 13, 2025 (Média Democracia) – Her Excellency the Secretary of State for Equality, Elvina Sousa Carvalho and her entourage participated in the high-level meeting of the Statutory Commission on Women at its 69th session, that the main focus of this session was to make a review and assessment in the implementation of the Pekin Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the special session for the 23rd General Assembly.

The Statute of the Commission on Women (CSW) as the principal global intergovernmental organization solely dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.

This review will include an assessment of the current challenges that impact the implementation of the Platform Actions and the achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment and their contribution to the realization of the full 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In the opening of this meeting, it was opened directly by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, who in his speech discussed more about women’s rights in the issue of justice and how the State and the whole society compromise to support women’s organizations in the world.

“Gender equality as a women’s right and as an issue of justice and a foundation for peace is a constant. We must support women’s organizations, because they play a crucial role and we must protect the defence of women’s rights. We need a great policy compromise to resolve the crisis and the inequalities,” said United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres.

As the Executive Director of UN Women, Sima Bahous said in her intervention that although women face many challenges, women have also experienced significant progress and continue to compromise to implement the Pekin Declaration and Platform for Action.

“Despite the challenges, we have made significant progress. In the past 30 years, we have celebrated significant progress in many areas, many women have become leaders, when women have leaders, and democracy is strengthened. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action are important documents that are the result of our collective compromises. We continue to compromise to implement the entire Beijing Declaration and Platform for Pekin Action,” said UN Women Executive Director, Sima Bahous.

In the 69th CSW session in 2025, the global community will also mark the third anniversary of the fourth World Conference on Women and the adoption of the Pekin Declaration and Platform for Action (1995).

The 69th CSW session was attended by representatives of Member States, UN Agencies, and NGOs accredited by ECOSOC from all regions of the world who were invited to attend this session.

In the high-level commission of the opening meeting of CWS-69, representatives of Timor-Leste who participated in this event were Her Excellency the Secretary of State for Equality, Elvina Sousa Carvalho together with Her Excellency the Vice Minister of Social Solidarity and Inclusion, Céu Brites, President of Commission F of the National Parliament, the Honourable Deputy, Maria Goru-Mali Barreto, also accompanied by the Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of Timor-Leste to the United Nations, Dionísio Babo Soares, Director General of S.E.I. Armando da Costa, Political Advisor for Gender Equality and ASEAN Affairs, Santina Soares, Advisor to the Permanent Mission of Timor-Leste to the UN, Licínio Branco and the Secretary of Cabinet of S.E.I. Rosa Maria de Araújo in the UN General Assembly room in New York, United States.
