Dili, April 22, 2025 (Media Democracia) – Acting Prime Minister Mariano Asanami Sabino, along with members of the government, visited the Episcopal Office to sign the book of condolences. Additionally, coordinated efforts are being made with the Catholic Church structure in Timor-Leste regarding the process following the passing of Pope Francis from this world.
Acting Prime Minister Mariano Asanami Sabino stated that today, the Council of Ministers has decreed two important points: first, a seven-day period of national mourning, and second, flags will be flown at half-mast for seven days. These gestures serve as expressions of condolence, respect, and tribute to His Holiness Pope Francis.
“We ask the entire community: in Dili, there will be a joint prayer at Lecidere; in Maliana Municipality, prayers will be held at Maliana Cathedral; and in Baucau Municipality, at Baucau Cathedral accompanied by hymns for the late Pope during these seven days, as a sign of homage and solidarity,” said Acting Prime Minister Mariano Asanami Sabino.
He further explained that on April 21, 2025, the world was shocked to hear the news that Pope Francis had departed this life and returned to the holy presence of the Lord. It is not only the Catholic Church that has lost someone, but the entire world has lost a leader who promoted peace, stability, and human dignity, and defended the rights of the voiceless and marginalized.
His political influence at the international level guided and encouraged leaders to nurture peace and reconciliation within their nations. This was especially meaningful for Timor-Leste, a country that had been graced by the Pope’s visit in the past, when he delivered messages that remain unforgettable and must be passed on to future generations.
“Timor-Leste, a beautiful and blessed land, continues to carry the Pope’s message as a living example of kindness toward others, promoting human dignity and mutual respect, thus fostering peace and stability within the country,” he said.
He emphasized that during his visit to Timor-Leste, Pope Francis held a special encounter with young people, recognizing them as the future of the nation. Through dialogue, the Pope delivered important messages to the youth, emphasizing that every young person plays a crucial role in the development of the state and the nation.
“Today, we have officially declared that for the next seven days we will hold prayers and sing hymns to pay tribute to the Pope. All Catholics in Dili are invited to gather at Lecidere for prayer until the Pope’s funeral takes place,” he added.
He also stated that on the day of the Pope’s funeral, all Catholics in Timor-Leste will hold a grand Mass at Tasi-Tolu as a final homage, to accompany the Pope’s soul as it ascends to a new world.
“Let us unite during these seven days to reflect on the Pope’s messages and exemplary actions, especially for children, young people, the people, leaders, and all political parties. Let us come together to reflect on these messages, so that we can develop good and just policies for our people and our nation,” he expressed.
He also explained that Catholicism is not merely a faith, but it is part of Timor-Leste’s identity, as written in the preamble of the Constitution, where the Catholic Church hierarchy participated side by side with the Maubere people in the struggle for independence.
He concluded by saying that today the government came together to sign the book of condolences to convey their direct sympathies to the Holy See, to the Catholic Church structure, and to Catholics around the world, especially to the people of Timor-Leste.
