MNEK Holds Bilateral Meeting with Delegation from Mozambique

Dili, June 6, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MNEK) held a bilateral meeting with a delegation from Mozambique, represnt by the Mozambican Minister of Justice, along with their team, to discuss and strengthen the bonds of friendship among the PALOP-TL countries.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, stated that this meeting took place in the context of the 15th Ministerial Conference of PALOP-TL, currently being hosted by Timor-Leste. The bilateral talks involved the Mozambican Minister of Justice and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from countries including Cape Verde, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Angola, aiming to consolidate and further strengthen the bonds of friendship among PALOP-TL nations.

“It’s important to remember our long-standing historical ties. In the past, our Head of State, José Ramos Horta, visited Maputo, where we strengthened our bilateral relations,” the Minister said after concluding the meeting with his Mozambican counterpart in the meeting room at MNEK, Praia do Coqueiro, Dili.

He noted that Mozambique and Timor-Leste share a special historical connection. In this bilateral meeting, they reviewed agreements already signed and discussed potential mechanisms for future political consultations on other important bilateral issues.

“As you all know, the Timorese government has been working hard. Since April, many international events have been held in Timor-Leste. These meetings demonstrate the trust and credibility Timor-Leste has gained globally in the fields of foreign policy, diplomacy, and multilateral engagement,” stated the Minister.

In the face of global challenges, strengthening cooperation remains crucial. As Timor-Leste officially joins ASEAN, the country also continues to build partnerships with CPLP and PALOP nations, and works closely with the European Union and other countries to ensure national development and achieve sustainable development goals, including other key national priorities.

From the Mozambican side, Minister of Justice Mateus da Cecilia Finiasse Saize stated that they visited Timor-Leste to hold this bilateral meeting as part of South-North cooperation and to reinforce the shared principles of cooperation among CPLP nations.

“In this context, we came to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Timor-Leste to express Mozambique’s commitment to cooperation. We are aware that in the past, a memorandum was signed by our President during an official visit to the Republic of Timor-Leste,” said Minister Mateus da Cecilia Finiasse Saize.

He explained that the current visit aimed to follow up and verify the implementation of the memorandum signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while also reaffirming Mozambique’s ongoing readiness to cooperate with Timor-Leste in order to support the country’s development.
