DCS Alumni Holds Second Congress

Dili, August 11, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Alumni of the Department of Social Communication (DKS), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FSSP), held their second congress with the theme “Reunion to Consolidate Alumni Unity to Strengthen the Communication Sector in Timor-Leste.” The congress took place on Saturday, 9 August 2025, at the Caicoli Campus, Dili.

In an interview, the Vice Dean III for Student Affairs of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Valenti Gusmão Laranjeira, expressed his gratitude to the organizing committee and their entire team for holding the event and inviting the faculty to participate in the Alumni Congress of the Department of Social Communication at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, UNTL.

“This activity is very important because the main objective of this congress is to reunite alumni from academic year 2008 to 2020, review the statutes that have been in place since the association’s establishment, and restructure the old statutes into a new structure for the Department of Social Communication,” said Vice Dean III, Valenti Gusmão Laranjeira.

He added that the congress also served as a platform for alumni to meet again after a long time without contact, allowing them to reconnect with fellow alumni and lecturers, share ideas, and discuss ways to bring the association forward in the future.

“The faculty’s contribution has always been to work hard and pay close attention to the Department of Social Communication, encouraging not only alumni but all students to study diligently. The department’s motto says, ‘If I don’t read, how can I write?’ Therefore, the faculty continues to focus on each student in the department so that they can progress toward achieving their personal and professional goals,” he continued.

He noted that the participation of the Department’s alumni in this activity gives hope that they will carry the association’s name proudly into the community, share their experiences with the community, and help students who need their support.

From the organizing committee’s side, Miguel Gonçalves explained that the congress was held for the second time because the first one coincided with the COVID-19 period and was therefore very limited in scope.

“The Alumni Association of the Department of Social Communication was established in 2020 with the aim of strengthening friendship between alumni of Social Communication and the lecturers of the Department,” said organizing committee member Miguel Gonçalves.

He stated that the hope from this second congress, with the theme “Reunion to Consolidate Alumni Unity to Strengthen the Communication Sector in Timor-Leste”, is to foster strong ties with the Department so that alumni can contribute both physical and non-physical resources that the Department needs.
