S.E.I Calls on Everyone to Respect the Rights of People with Disabilities and Leave No One Behind

Dili, December 20, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Secretary of State for Equality (SEI), through its National Director for Gender Development, participated and delivered a message during the celebration of the International Day of People with Disabilities and a municipal-level dialogue activity under the theme “Promoting an Inclusive Society for People with Disabilities to Advance Social Progress.” The activity was accessed by Média Democracia from SEI’s official page this Friday.

The National Director for Gender Development at SEI, Olga da Costa Monteiro, stated that this celebration aims to raise public awareness and understanding that disability is not a limitation to a person’s value, but rather a condition that requires support, accessibility, and respect in order to promote and protect the rights of people with disabilities.

She emphasized that the rights of people with disabilities, such as access to education, health services, employment, and social and political participation are part of universal human rights, and that efforts must continue to combat stigma and discrimination faced by people with disabilities.

“Giving voice and visibility to people with disabilities by providing opportunities for them to share their experiences, aspirations, and recommendations with decision-makers strengthens the commitment of the Government and its partners. This includes urging the Government, local authorities, and development partners to fulfill their obligations to implement inclusive policies and programs for people with disabilities,” said the National Director for Gender Development at SEI.

She added that encouraging the active participation of people with disabilities in development contributes to social and economic progress, community development, and the promotion of an inclusive and just society by strengthening the values of solidarity and inclusion, ensuring that no one is left behind in the national development process.

Further explaining, as a State institution responsible for gender equality and social inclusion, SEI calls on all stakeholders to ensure accessibility in public services and infrastructure and to continue supporting the active participation of people with disabilities in decision-making processes. The celebration was held at the Becoar Parish Hall and organized by the Timor-Leste Disabled People’s Club (KDT-TL).
