PNTL to Implement Maximum Security during Christmas and New Year Celebrations

Dili, December 23, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The National Command of the National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL) will ensure security during the major Christmas and New Year celebrations across Timor-Leste, so that no conflicts arise and peace, stability, and harmony are maintained. This information was accessed by Média Democracia from the official PNTL page on Monday.

The Commander-General of the National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL), Police Commissioner General Henrique da Costa, stated that the PNTL Command has issued operational directives to all Municipal PNTL Commands and units to intensify patrols in order to guarantee security during the Christmas and New Year celebrations throughout the territory of Timor-Leste.

“At present, we have already issued directives to all Municipal PNTL Commands and units to carry out patrol activities to prevent crime and other potential problems across Timor-Leste. Therefore, PNTL will ensure maximum security during the Christmas and New Year celebrations,” said Police Commissioner General Henrique da Costa.

The Commissioner General explained that with only a few days remaining before Christmas and New Year, churches already have operational plans in place, including the deployment of PNTL personnel to ensure security.

“Based on a joint directive between PNTL and F-FDTL, we have formed a joint task force in which both forces complement each other by conducting patrols for prevention and responding to any crimes that may occur during the Christmas and New Year celebrations in Timor-Leste,” he added.

The Commissioner General further informed that during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, a joint operational directive between PNTL and F-FDTL prohibits citizens from consuming alcoholic beverages in public places. Therefore, citizens who wish to celebrate Christmas and New Year and consume alcohol are advised to do so at home to avoid problems.

“My appeal to all young people and the general public, as a security authority, is to remind everyone that security is in all of our hands. It is not solely the responsibility of the police and the security forces, but rather a collective contribution to ensure stability and peace,” said the Commissioner General.

He further explained that Christmas and New Year celebrations throughout Timor-Leste must take place in a calm and peaceful environment, and that everyone must contribute to creating peace and stability. On this occasion, he also conveyed, on behalf of PNTL, best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2026 to all citizens of Timor-Leste.
