Dili, January 5, 2026 (Democracia Media) – The Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace was filled with joy, hope, and a spirit of renewal as the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, led the official New Year 2026 countdown ceremony, in collaboration with the IX Constitutional Government and with support from the private sector. This activity was accessed by Democracy Media through the Presidential Palace page on Monday.
The Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, delivered remarks sharing a profound reflection from the Book of Ecclesiastes, emphasizing that there is “a time for everything under heaven,” and that 2026 must be a year to “build” and “heal.” He called on the nation to unite around shared objectives.
“Let us leave behind what was not good and carry forward hope, peace, and love into 2026. Now is the time to rejoice,” said Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão.
The Prime Minister stated that the ceremony concluded with an emotional New Year countdown, during which President Ramos-Horta and international guests stood together. As fireworks illuminated the Dili night sky, the atmosphere was filled with a strong sense of unity, marking the beginning of a year dedicated to national progress and the further strengthening of Timor-Leste’s cultural identity and democratic consolidation.

The event also featured musical performances and the announcement of winners of the National Christmas Nativity Scene Competition, showcasing cultural creativity and the faith of the people of Timor-Leste.
