SEPC Alert to the People of Timor-Leste to Take Precautions Against Strong Winds and Sea Waves

Dili, 21 January 2026 (Media Democracia) – The Secretary of State for Civil Protection announced to all the people of Timor-Leste that the Meteorology and Geophysics authorities had already announced, over the past two weeks, that all citizens must pay attention to the increasing wind speed starting from last week up to the present moment, as the wind speed remains strong.

According to the Secretary of State for Civil Protection, Domingos Mariano Reis, the Meteorology and Geophysics authorities have announced over the past two weeks that all citizens must pay attention and take precautions due to the strong wind speeds.

“You have already accessed the information in the media. It appears that the Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics (DMG) has made announcements over the past two weeks, and I am once again informing all citizens to remain alert, starting from last week up to the present moment. The wind speed in coastal areas has reached 60 km/h, which indicates very strong winds. Therefore, this is also a reminder to fishermen and residents living in coastal areas to be cautious of the risks, because sea wave heights can reach up to 2 meters due to winds of 60 km/h. There may also be heavy rainfall in areas where you carry out activities or reside. Thus, we ask communities and citizens to regularly access information from the Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics (DMG) to understand the climatic situation. This is especially important for coastal areas such as the municipalities of Same, Viqueque, Baucau, and Lospalos.” Said SEPC Domingos at the Kampu-Baru

The Secretary of State for Civil Protection also emphasized that special attention must be given to young children going to school, and they should not attempt to cross rivers during rainy conditions, because heavy rain can cause rivers to swell and flood.

“I also ask that children do not take shelter under large trees during this time, and I continue to urge parents to take care of their children and to keep accompanying them over the coming weeks. I also inform elderly people not to attempt to cross rivers when the rivers are flooded.” Emphasized the Secretary of State for Civil Protection, Domingos Mariano Reis.

The Secretary further highlighted that, three days ago, there was a case involving an Indonesian citizen who was swept away by a river in the Malibaka river area, as a result of flooding. Therefore, he continues to urge all people and citizens to remain vigilant and ensure their safety in relation to the current climatic situation.
