Dili, June 27, 2026 (Media Democracia) – The people of Timor-Leste continue to feel sadness and grief over the passing of the late former President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Francisco Guterres “Lú-Olo”. Although the nation has lost a national leader, the community and leaders remember that life and death are in God’s hands, and that everyone will face this moment according to God’s time.
According to Canossian Sister FDCC, Guilhermina Marçal, Francisco Guterres “Lú-Olo” contributed greatly over many years of his life to the liberation struggle and the building of the State of Timor-Leste.
“He played an important role in the process of the nation’s liberation, defending the sovereignty and independence of the Timorese people until Timor-Leste became an independent state recognized in the world,” said Sister Guilhermina Marçal at the residence of the late Francisco Guterres “Lú-Olo”, in Farol, Dili, Wednesday (24/06).
She further explained that after the restoration of independence, Lú-Olo continued to dedicate himself to service to the nation through various roles. He was once President of the Constituent Assembly that prepared and approved the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, a fundamental document for the State of Timor-Leste. The late leader also presided over the National Parliament before being elected President of the Republic.
“Many people remember Lú-Olo as a simple, humble leader who was close to everyone. Wherever he went, he always smiled and spoke with citizens without barriers, showing respect and fraternity to all. These characteristics made him an important example for youth and future generations. Throughout his life, Francisco Guterres “Lú-Olo” dedicated himself to the people and the nation, and his service, sacrifice, and patriotism will remain in the history of Timor-Leste and serve as inspiration for children and young people to continue working for the nation’s development,” she said.
Although the Timorese people have lost a hero and national leader, the memory and legacy of the late Francisco Guterres “Lú-Olo” will continue to live on in the Timorese people.
On this occasion, all the people pray that God receives his soul and grants eternal rest to his spirit. Feelings of solidarity are also extended to the bereaved family, especially to his wife and four children. The people hope that the family will find strength and resilience to continue living with the values and principles that the late leader left behind for them.
