Dili, April 28, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Civil Protection Authority (APC), through its External Relations and Communication Office team, reported weekly data regarding natural disaster events in Timor-Leste over the past two weeks. The press conference was held in the APC conference room in Caicoli, Dili.
According to Nelson Nunes Orleans from the External Relations and Communication Office (GREK), the Civil Protection Authority registered a total of eighty (80) disaster cases during the two-week period, caused by climate change and various types of events.
“Over these two weeks in Timor-Leste, various types of natural disasters occurred, and the Civil Protection Authority recorded damages to around 80 houses. These included 29 cases requiring emergency support, 55 people affected by natural disasters, and 396 individuals evacuated across 23 cases, all resulting from climate change events that took place in our country,” said Nelson Nunes Orleans, Head of the External Relations and Communication Section (GREK).
He further detailed that disasters occurred across several municipalities such as in Ainaro Municipality 1 house burned down, in Baucau Municipality 3 houses damaged by strong winds, in Dili Municipality 1 house damaged by strong winds, Ermera Municipality 8 houses damaged by landslides, in Liquiçá Municipality 3 houses damaged by strong winds, with 1 death and 2 injuries, in Manufahi Municipality 2 houses damaged by strong winds, Viqueque Municipality 2 houses damaged by strong winds and 1 house burned down, in Manatuto Municipality 32 houses damaged by strong winds, 19 houses flooded, 2 houses destroyed by landslides, and 1 house burned down. These figures relate to disasters recorded over the past two weeks across the municipalities.
“Currently, the Municipal Commands of the Civil Protection Authority, together with relevant partners, continue to provide emergency assistance to families affected by natural disasters, including both food and non-food items. Operational Commands continue to carry out detailed assessments of the damaged and lost assets,” he added.
He also emphasized that the Civil Protection Authority, together with its partners deployed in the municipalities, is carrying out emergency and recovery actions based on disaster classifications according to Law No. 7/2021 of June 20, related to the types of disasters that occurred.
He further explained that after conducting the initial data collection, the Civil Protection Authority would carry out a reassessment to verify the houses that suffered damage, classifying them as either totally destroyed or partially damaged. Results will be published soon to facilitate recovery efforts for the houses that suffered total destruction.
The public was also urged to remain vigilant and cautious to minimize risks caused by natural disasters.
