Dili, March 20, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Forestry (MAPPF) today laid the first stone for the construction of the Veterinary Laboratory and Bacteriology Unit.
The Second Secretary of State for Surveillance, José de Araújo informed that the government’s policy wants to reduce more animal production by 20% in 2023 to 2028.
“The purpose of this launch is to convey that currently sick animals are already numerous and very numerous in our country, therefore veterinarians want to suppress this disease through integrated management of livestock and national management in collaboration with the Menzies on how to respond to government policies in suppressing the number of sick animals.” Said the Second Secretary of State for Supervision, José de Araújo
He said the ninth government’s policy was to prevent sick animals and this would be done in five municipalities but would also depend on the funds allocated by the government.
“The ninth government policy is how to prevent sick animals, therefore we must conduct socialization to the community so that they know and have insight into sick animals so that they can show that their animals are healthy and free from disease, but if their animals are sick they can contact the MAPPF technique.” He added.
On the other hand, António Gonçalves as Menzies Country Manager in Timor-Leste also supports the National Health Laboratory to offer confirmation of resistance models that do not identify common causative organisms and AMR alertness. This includes strengthening laboratory infrastructure, training, providing orientation and training to clinical personnel including laboratory personnel.
“Menzies Timor-Leste through the Fleming Fund Program as a UK aid program managed by the UK Department of Health and Social Care, which was established to support countries in creating or sharing and using antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data so they can optimize the use of antibiotics and reduce resistance to drugs.” He said.
Menzies has been working with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Forestry (MAPPF) since 2017, then in 2018 Menzies applied for and won this grant to support the Timor-Leste government, strengthening the AMR alert system in Timor-Leste.
