Dili, June 30, 2026 (Media Democracia) – The Government of Timor-Leste expresses its gratitude to all the people who, during the national mourning period, showed respect, solidarity, and unity by participating extensively in the funeral ceremony and process for the late Former President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres “Lú-Olo”. The Government considers the people’s support and presence as a manifestation of recognition for the great contribution the late leader made to the nation’s independence and development.
According to the Vice Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Rural Development and Housing, Mariano Assanami Sabino, the Government of Timor-Leste expresses gratitude to all the people during the national mourning period for the late Former President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres “Lú-Olo”.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to all the Timorese people and to all public and private institutions for showing high respect, unity, and responsibility during the seven days of National Mourning that the Government decreed due to the passing of our Former President of the Republic, His Excellency Francisco Guterres ‘Lu Olo’.” said Vice Prime Minister Mariano Assanami at the Government Palace, (29/06/26).
He stated that the large participation of the people in the funeral ceremony and various tributes throughout the country once again showed that our people deeply recognize the legacy of someone who dedicated his entire life to the independence struggle and to service for Timor-Leste.
“I want to give special thanks to the Defense and Security Forces, religious authorities, health professionals, public servants, media organizations, civil society organizations, and private institutions who, with dedication, professionalism, and a spirit of mission, contributed to ensuring all ceremonies proceeded with dignity, order, and respect.” he added.
To all citizens who paid their respects, observed the National Mourning period, and stood together during this difficult time, I convey my full recognition and respect. As a nation, we have shown that we know how to honor those who gave their entire lives to the nation.
The memory of our late Francisco Guterres “Lu Olo” continues to inspire us to work for peace, national unity, and the development of Timor-Leste.
On behalf of the Government, once again I renew my deepest condolences to the bereaved family and thank all Timorese people for the solidarity and example of civic responsibility shown to our country.
