WVTL-FCOTI Launches EARTH Project Held in Four Municipalities

Dili, March 12, 2025 (Média Democracia) – World Vision Timor-Leste (WVTL) together with Findação Carbon Offset Timor (FCOTI) hosted the launch of the EARTH project to improve agroforestry for Timorese families financially resilient due to the European Union. The event was held at the Suai Room, Timor Plaza.

According to World Vision Timor-Leste’s Resilient Program, Ombelino Pereira, the launch of this project will be realized in four municipalities, such as Manufahi, Covalima, Manatuto and Oe-cusse.

“This initiative aims to improve food security and income through a climate resilient and sustainable agroforestry sector to benefit our communities such as youth, people with disabilities, women and girls including grandparents in four municipalities of Manatuto, Same, Covalima and the Special Region of Oecusse, Ambeno RAEOA, through the development of climate resilient agroforestry.” said World Vision Timor-Leste Resilience Programme, Ombelino Pereira

He continued, the project will only be implemented in four municipalities based on an internal study that clearly shows that the area is indeed suitable for agroforestry, because in two municipalities, World Vision will implement it such as in Covalima and the Special Region of Oecusse, Ambeno RAEOA and two others that will be implemented by partners of the Fundação Carbon Offset Timor, that is in Manatuto and Manufahi.

“The EARTH project will be implemented in four municipalities over five years with a total funding of 3 million supported by the European Union and also supported by our Support Office Australia,” he said.

He added that the positive benefits of this program are that it is known that reforestation of these areas has given rise to agroforestry projects that have quite good benefits, in terms of restoring the condition of areas that have been damaged by the climate.

Explaining better that this project is only looking at the agroforestry project but we are also looking at a small component, how we can involve carbon farming in this agroforestry project. This shows how we plant trees that produce good carbon in Timor-Leste, therefore will work with the government how to socialize this project to the community, so that this project can be achieved in the future.
