HIV/AIDS Is Not Just a Community Illness, But a National Concern

Ainaro, July 24, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The National Institute for the Fight against HIV/AIDS (INCSIDA) conducted an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign in Edi Village, Maubisse Administrative Post, Ainaro Municipality.

According to Daniel Marçal, President of INCSIDA, HIV/AIDS is not merely a local or municipal issue, it is a serious national and global concern.

“HIV/AIDS is a major disease and a global challenge that severely impacts people’s lives. That is why the Timor-Leste Government is highly concerned. When a community’s health is at risk, the government cannot simply stand by, it must take action. The state must prioritize and allocate proper funding for health programs to support community well-being,” said INCSIDA President Daniel Marçal in Edi Village.

He further stated that while the government is currently investing in infrastructure such as roads and water systems, equal attention must be paid to public health, particularly in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS.

“People in our communities are deeply affected by HIV/AIDS. Therefore, the government must also prioritize health by investing in health programs,” he emphasized.

On behalf of the Ministry of the Coordinating Minister for Social Affairs (MECAS), Arcanjelo Goveia Leite reaffirmed the government’s continued commitment to prioritizing HIV/AIDS prevention programs in Timor-Leste.

“INCSIDA operates under the supervision of MECAS, and for this reason, MECAS fully supports all activities led by the Institute. Countries around the world are making HIV/AIDS a top priority. This disease doesn’t just affect young men and women, it can affect anyone, including older adults. Once infected, people must receive immediate treatment,” said Arcanjelo Goveia Leite.

He also urged youth to protect themselves from the disease by getting tested to determine whether their blood is positive or negative, as HIV/AIDS is a life-threatening illness that also endangers the future of the nation.

Local authority of Edi Village, Júlio Mendonça Martins, highlighted the importance of the day’s session for their community, praising INCSIDA’s efforts to educate people on HIV/AIDS transmission.

“I feel very grateful that INCSIDA came to carry out awareness activities in our village. With the information we’ve received today, we will continue to spread it among other members of the community, especially youth who weren’t able to attend,” said Júlio Mendonça.

He further encouraged young people to avoid risky sexual behavior, as HIV/AIDS can endanger their lives. He also called on those who attended the session to share the knowledge with friends and family who may still be unaware of the disease, to help prevent further transmission.
