Dili, 19 May 2026 (Media Democracia) – The Timor-Leste Journalists Association (AJTL), together with Oxfam, facilitated training for journalists to increase capacity and expand knowledge on women’s rights to land and property in Timor-Leste.
According to trainer Tito Maia dos Reis, securing women’s rights to land and property is extremely important for social development, the economy, and justice in the country.
“Land isn’t only a place to live or farm, but also a source of livelihood, cultural identity, and family inheritance. Although the Constitution of RDTL guarantees equality between women and men before the law, in daily reality many women still face difficulties in securing their rights to land. This situation occurs due to the influence of tradition, lack of legal documents, and limited information about the laws that protect their rights.” said trainer Tito Maia dos Reis at Oxfam, Hudi-laran.
He also stated that the training was attended by 27 journalists from various media outlets, including Media Democracia, TVE, Independente, SAP News TL, Media One Timor, Media Mudansa, and including some NGOs and radio.
On the other hand, Francisca Ximenes, a journalist from Media One Timor, said this training really helped to increase her knowledge and capacity in journalism, especially on issues of women’s rights.
“The materials we learned in this training are important to help journalists provide accurate and educational information to the community.” said Francisca.
Meanwhile, it is hoped that this training will contribute to journalists, so they can build the capacity to produce coverage that is deeper and more sensitive regarding issues of equality, rights, and women’s access to land and property in Timor-Leste.
