UNTL Rector Meets with PM to Discuss UNTL’s Priorities

Dili, 25 may 2026 (Media Democracia) – The Rector of the Universidade Nasional Timor Loro Sa’e (UNTL) met with Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão at the Government Palace to discuss UNTL’s priorities for the coming year and to request government support for public universities in Timor-Leste.

According to the Rector of the Universidade Nasional Timor-Loro Sa’e (UNTL), Juviano Antonio da Costa, the purpose of the meeting was to present UNTL’s structure to the Prime Minister.

The main objective of today’s meeting with the Prime Minister and the UNTL Rectorate structure is that we only took office on 30 January 2026, and have only been in mandate for 4 months. Therefore, we have an obligation to come and present our structure to the Prime Minister, as the head of government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.” said UNTL Rector Juviano Antonio da Costa at the Government Palace (22/05/2026).

The UNTL Rector emphasized that they will update the UNTL development plan and also present the audit report related to the state budget executed at UNTL.

In addition, we will also present our development plan for UNTL during our mandate to the Prime Minister, as well as some audit report information related to the state budget and the budget that we are currently executing at UNTL. The budget plan for next year, and the plans we have prepared to improve UNTL’s basic conditions and infrastructure development for the future. We presented these to the Prime Minister so he can consider the plans we have prepared for UNTL’s development during our mandate.” the UNTL Rector added.

The UNTL Rector also asked the Prime Minister for support to create a new, dignified building for the UNTL Rector and Rectorate.

The most important thing is the improvement of UNTL’s infrastructure itself. This is a key point we presented to the Prime Minister. We want the government to support us to build a new building for the rector and rectorate.” he said.

Next year, we see that the issue of infrastructure is urgent to create a new, dignified rectorate for UNTL. We have already presented this, and if there is support, it will be located in Hera.

Meanwhile Improving UNTL’s internal management requires improving the academic process at UNTL and improving human resources, especially lecturers who train students at UNTL, so that they can raise their qualifications to meet the standards for lecturers in ASEAN and in the world.
