Dili, September 4, 2026 (Media Democracia) – This Thursday, the Suai District Court, through its final decision in the first interrogation process, decided to apply the measure of preventive detention to four defendants suspected of involvement in the death of Terezinha Cardoso in Wetaba Village, Tilomar Administrative Post, Covalima Municipality.
The defendants were brought to court, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP), represented by prosecutor Renato Bere Nahac, charged the defendants with the crime of Simple Homicide as provided for under Article 138 of the Timor-Leste Penal Code (KPTL).
After hearing the defendants, in the Court’s dispatch, Judge-in-Training Spriano decided to apply the measure of Preventive Detention to the four defendants with the initials SNI, DC, JC, and AMA, consisting of three SNI members and one UPF member.
Previously, in his allegations, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, represented by Prosecutor Renato Bere Nahac, asked the Court to apply the coercive measure of Preventive Detention to the four defendants.
And the Defense did not agree with the Public Prosecutor’s allegations, asking the Court instead to apply the measure of Term of Identity and Residence (TIR) while awaiting the investigation.
The process was presided over by Judge-in-Training Spriano. The Public Prosecutor’s Office was represented by Prosecutor Renato Bere Nahac, and the defendants received legal assistance from Public Defender Domingos dos Santos.
It is recalled that the defendants were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Service Directorate (DSIK) and the Police Information Service Directorate (DSIP), which conducted an operation and search on 31/08/26 at the defendants’ residences, based on No. 0016/20.CVSUI, due to suspicion of committing the crime of simple homicide in which Terezinha Cardoso lost her life.
