Dili, September 11, 2026 (Media Democracia) – Solemn Mass for the Transfer and Burial of the Mortal Remains of the Four Prelates invited the community of the faithful to reflect on human fragility and mortality, the meaning of life, and the responsibility to leave a good legacy for future generations.
In the homily, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Dili, Cardinal Dom Virgílio do Carmo da Silva, said that human life has a physical nature that is limited and not eternal. Everyone will face finitude and, on the last day, will return to the earth. Therefore, the reality of mortality must become an opportunity for people to reflect deeply on the meaning and purpose of life.
The message also showed that people cannot live only for themselves, but must consider others and the good things they can leave for generations to come.
“Live to leave a legacy” became an important principle in this reflection, because a person’s value is not only in the time they are alive, but also in the good things they leave behind for others, said the Metropolitan Archbishop of Dili, Cardinal Dom Virgílio do Carmo da Silva.
That legacy can take the form of spiritual things: teachings, hope, charity, good deeds, and service to the community. Through these, future generations can continue the work that the previous generation left behind.
The Church also invited the faithful to learn from the reality of mortality, to reduce arrogance and vanity, and to strengthen respect, consideration, and solidarity among people who live together.
“One day we will no longer be here, and everything we have gathered will be left to others,” the homily’s message showed, calling everyone to consider what will continue after they die.
In this context, the mortal remains of the Four Prelates who will be buried in this holy ground also become a symbol to understand the fragility and finitude of human life.
The Prelates, during their lives, dedicated their energy, strength, health, and wisdom to the mission of the Church. Even though their physical lives have ended, the legacy and teachings they left behind will continue in the community and in future generations.
The Solemn Mass was also a moment of thanksgiving to God, because the faithful gave thanks for God’s love, faithfulness, and blessings shown to the people.
The Church invited the community to carry values such as love, charity, hope, respect, and service to others in daily life, so that a good legacy can continue from one generation to the next.
In the end, the message called everyone to live with the awareness that we don’t live for ourselves alone, but have the responsibility to prepare and leave a good legacy for those who will continue living after us.
