Dili, September 11, 2026 (Media Democracia) – The Representative of the Holy See in Timor-Leste, Monsignor Marcel Smejkal, considers the contribution of four important prelates to the Church and the people of Timor-Leste, especially during the periods when the nation faced difficult situations.
Monsignor Marcel Smejkal said that the lives and witness of the four prelates can be understood through the figure of the “Good Shepherd”, who is ready to give his life for his flock, protect the weak, and show compassion for those who suffer and are lost.
“The four shepherds showed in their lives the beauty of the Good Shepherd. They gave their lives, protected the weak, and didn’t run away when facing danger,” said Monsignor Marcel Smejkal.
The translation of the mortal remains of the four Timorese prelates to the Dili Cathedral is considered a mark of historical justice and a strong sign of national unity. This situation also reflects the understanding and fraternal cooperation between the Catholic Church and the Government of Timor-Leste.
This solemn Mass is also considered an important moment because it was held during the commemoration of the second anniversary of Pope Francis’ apostolic visit to Timor-Leste, which took place in September 2024.
“During that visit, Pope Francis emphasized the connection between the Catholic faith and Timor-Leste’s national identity, and encouraged the people to protect children and the elderly as important treasures of society,” he said.
In his address, Monsignor Marcel said that Pope Francis’ message is also linked to the pastoral work of the prelates, especially in efforts to protect human dignity, confront poverty and oppression, and promote peace and reconciliation.
Monsignor Marcel Smejkal also recognized the legacy of the four prelates who, during their lives, lived a religious life and made great contributions to the faithful and the people of Timor-Leste.
Monsignor Jaime Garcia Guimarães is recognized as a founder and educator who, in 1936, planted the seeds for the future through the Soibada Seminary. He understood that the freedom of a nation begins with the formation and education of conscience.
“Despite facing persecution and mistreatment during World War II, he remained firm in his mission as a shepherd. In 1945, he became the first Bishop in Timor and contributed to the growth of the Timorese Church,” he recounted.
Meanwhile, Monsignor José Ricardo Pires, during the Indonesian invasion in 1975, is considered a figure who didn’t abandon the people in dark times. He defended those who sought the truth, helped those who suffered, and, through diplomatic efforts, denounced systematic abuse and violence.
Monsignor Martinho da Costa Lopes is also remembered as the “voice for those who had no voice.” As Apostolic Administrator, he brought the situation and the cry of the Timorese people to the international community.
“Even though he was forced into exile in 1983, he continued to defend human dignity and human rights at the international level, and became a symbol of a Church that defends justice and doesn’t remain silent in the face of violations,” said Monsignor Marcel.
As for Monsignor Alberto Ricardo da Silva, he is remembered especially for his commitment to peace, forgiveness, and reconciliation. He contributed to the national reconciliation process and encouraged youth to choose forgiveness over revenge.
He emphasized that the reconstruction of the nation must go hand in hand with efforts to heal the wounds in people’s hearts, in order to build a society of peace and unity.
Before concluding his speech, Monsignor Marcel appealed to civil authorities to make their dedication to the common good an example for society. He also encouraged bishops and priests to take the pastoral charity of the four prelates as a guide in their service.
To the people and youth of Timor-Leste, he appealed to remain firm in faith, seek peace, protect the weak, and walk in the light of the Gospel.
“May the Good Shepherd bless Timor-Leste and grant you peace, unity, and hope for the generations to come.” That was his closing.
