Father’s Strength: Matias de Jesus Works Hard to Support His Family’s Needs

Dili, June 13, 2026 (Media Democracia) – A Father is a Great Responsibility for the Family at 74 years old, Matias de Jesus decided to make a living through hard labor by selling vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants, and others. Originally from Aileu Municipality, Remexio Administrative Post, Fahisoi Village, Mautoba Hamlet, he now lives in Moris Foun Hamlet, Comoro Village.

Matias says that every day he continues to work hard as a laborer to support his family, especially his children who still need support for daily living.

Every day I walk along the roadsides with a carrying pole to sell tomatoes, eggplants, and mustard greens in Dili city. I started selling goods in 2015 until today. From this small business I’ve been able to support 16 childre, some have already started families and some are now at university level. From this small business I support my family and 16 children, consisting of 5 daughters and 11 sons. Right now 9 have started families and 5 have succeeded and already have jobs, 3 others are still continuing at university level.” Matias said in Moris Foun Hamlet, 12/06/2026.

Even though age is catching up to him as an elder, Matias still has strong spirit and great will to work. Starting early in the morning, he leaves home carrying his equipment and goes to do labor wherever it’s needed. The income he gets isn’t big, but it’s enough to help support his family and meet basic needs.

From 7:20 AM I take vegetables out from home, walk from Moris Foun Hamlet up to Ponte Foun, then go down to the beach. When the vegetables run low or are sold out, I go back home to have lunch, then after eating I continue to Taibesi to buy more fresh vegetables, to sell again in the afternoon, starting from 5 PM until 7 PM at night. The vegetables cost me $20, and if I sell them all I can get a profit of $10 to $15.” he explained.

Matias says life isn’t easy, because prices keep rising and family needs are many. But for him, work is the way to keep providing food and education for his children.

Even though I’m old now, I will keep working because I want to see my children live well and have a longer future.” Matias said firmly.

Matias de Jesus’s story has become an example of perseverance and responsibility in family. His dedication shows that age isn’t an obstacle to keep fighting for life and supporting the people we love.
