Dili, 22 May 2026 (Media Democracia) – On the occasion of the 24th commemoration of Timor-Leste’s Restoration of Independence Day, the President of the National Parliament considers the speech of the President of the Republic (PR) at that commemoration to be very important.
According to the President of the National Parliament (PN), Maria Fernanda Lai the President of the Republic’s speech carried a message especially for the youth of Timor-Leste, because Timor-Leste has now celebrated 24 years as a young nation in Asia.
“I ask especially our youth to learn languages. Even though Timor-Leste faces many challenges in ASEAN, there are also great opportunities. With knowledge and mastery of languages, youth can open the way to share Timor-Leste’s experiences. We can gain other opportunities to share Timor-Leste’s experiences. As a member country of ASEAN, although the world has many problems, I hope that our peaceful situation with Indonesia can bring good benefits to our country.” said PN President Maria Fernanda Lai in Tasi-tolu on May 20, 2026.
She stated that on this important day, the President of the National Parliament also delivered a message to youth to promote peace and political stability.
“I want to send a message to the youth, fighting each other gains us nothing. If possible, as youth, promote peace among our people as a good means of communication, so that we have political stability to develop Timor-Leste economically within the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, ASEAN.” she said.
In addition, she herself committed to meeting with young students, especially in the field of international relations in Timor-Leste, to push them forward and promote languages, because many of our officials don’t speak English well.
